The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities runs an electric system that serves 127.5 square miles within the Kansas City, Kansas, area. This system includes two coal-fired electric power generating stations along with gas and oil peaking generation. These generating stations are powered by clean-burning low sulfur coal that is carried to us by rail from Wyoming.
BPU’s electric distribution reliability and stability is made possible through a combination of generation and transmission efficiencies.
Being a member of the Southwest Power Pool assures low costs and high reliability to our customers. Our basic reliability index for electricity is greater than 99.9%. We’re proud to offer some of the lowest electric rates within metropolitan Kansas City.
BPU’s water system serves the entire area of Kansas City, Kansas, as well as portions of suburban Wyandotte County, Leavenworth County and Johnson County. Through rigorous testing at our water laboratory, our water is ensured to be of the highest purity levels. After testing, a clean and abundant supply of quality water is then delivered to our community at some of the most economical costs in the nation.
