Heat Pump Program

The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) offers Energy Smart programs for Kansas City, Kansas, residential customers that are designed to encourage the use of high-efficiency electric space- and water-heating equipment, central air conditioning and other measures in homes. The installation of new energy-efficient equipment will save you money on your energy bills and make your home more comfortable. Energy-efficient equipment also helps reduce the demand on the natural resources needed to produce energy.

For year-round comfort, energy-efficient homeowners choose heat pumps for their homes’ heating and cooling needs. Heat pumps offer higher efficiency and lower operating costs, combining energy efficiency, convenience and comfort, and making your home healthier and more comfortable. There are a number of Heat Pump Dealers specializing in heat pump installation that we’ve assembled for your convenience. These dealers maintain the required City Business License to sell and service heating and cooling equipment in Kansas City, Kansas. While they have been recommended, BPU does not endorse any specific dealer or product.

In the summer, a heat pump removes heat from inside your home and replaces it with cool air. Simply speaking, it works just like a conventional, high-efficiency air conditioner.

In the winter, the system works in reverse. It removes available heat from the air outside your home (yes, there is heat in cold outdoor air) and moves it indoors, providing an even, comfortable temperature level throughout your home. There are seldom any warm or cold spots, such as those that exist when a gas furnace alone is used.

When outdoor temperatures drop below 20 degrees F or so, a backup heating system – usually an existing gas furnace – automatically provides supplemental heat. In the Kansas City area, a heat pump provides sufficient heat for more than 75 percent of the heating season when temperatures are above freezing. That's more than enough time to help you save energy and save money on your annual heating and cooling costs.

Our Residential Heat Pump Brochure is also available for you to download.

There are three types of heat-pump systems:
  1. All-electric heat pumps
  2. Add-on heat pumps, also referred to as “dual fuel”
  3. Geothermal heat pumps
When considering energy-efficiency programs for your home, BPU is committed to helping you, our customer, save money on your energy bills and conserve energy.

With rising natural gas prices, BPU’s electric-heating rebate program offers rebates for heat-pump equipment and electric hot-water tanks of 50 gallons or larger for Kansas City, Kansas, electric customers. Please see the Residential Rebate Schedule for rebate levels.

BPU is committed to helping our customers manage the expected higher cost of heating their homes. If you have a question or would like to learn more about Energy Smart electric-heating program offerings that may be right for you, call (913) 573-9988.
