BPU General Manager Bill Johnson Receives National Industry Leadership Award

(KANSAS CITY, Kan.) — Bill Johnson, General Manager of the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities was named a recipient of the 2020 Industry Leadership Award at the 117th Annual Virtual Fall Executive Leadership and Management Convention of RMEL. This national award recognizes an individual whose leadership, service, and dedication have made significant contributions within their organization and the broader electric utility industry over years of service.

In announcing this industry award, RMEL noted Bill Johnson’s 40 years of utility experience, most recently as Chief Executive Officer of the largest municipal electric and water utility in the State of Kansas where he oversees 650 employees. Prior to being named BPU’s top senior executive, Bill oversaw its electric operations, transmission, distribution, engineering, and other components for nearly three decades. He helped modernize the electric infrastructure and introduced an advanced enterprise technology system to improve operations and efficiency. He worked his way up from an entry-level position into eventually managing the entire utility operation.

He is also a Past President of the Kansas Municipal Utilities, and active with the American Public Power Association (APPA). His civic leadership and involvement is extensive, making a significant difference in the community BPU serves. Bill is on the Board of Directors for the United Way of Wyandotte County, and a past Board Member of the Boys and Girls Club of Kansas City.

Bill has received the distinguished “Black Achievers Award” from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, and is past president of the Kansas-Missouri chapter of the American Association of Blacks in Energy. He has contributed greatly to the electric utility industry locally and nationally, is an active civic and philanthropic leader in the community, and he is the first African American to be appointed as General Manager of the nearly 110-year-old Kansas City Board of Public Utilities.

RMEL is a not-for-profit energy trade association that has served the electric utility industry with a variety of education and networking services since 1903. RMEL’s mission is to preparing the electric energy industry for the future through education and networking. Once known as the Rocky Mountain Electrical league, the association officially became RMEL in the 1990s to better reflect a membership base that spans the entire country.

BPU’s water department was originally created in 1909, and its electric utility was operational in 1912. The purpose of the utility, then and to this day, is to provide the highest quality electric and water services at the lowest possible cost. Today the publicly owned utility serves approximately 65,000 electric and 51,000 water customers, primarily in Wyandotte County, Kansas.
