Released on January 14, 2026
(Kansas City, KS) – The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities (BPU) is warning customers about scam phone calls from individuals falsely claiming to be working with BPU on a net metering program.
Net metering is a program for customers who generate their own electricity, such as with rooftop solar, and receive credit for the excess power they send back to the grid.
BPU has received reports of callers who:
- Claim they are working with or on behalf of BPU
- State that BPU mailed customers a yellow or pink card related to net metering
- Appear to have access to a customer’s name, phone number, and service address
- Use local phone numbers, including numbers appearing to originate from nearby communities
BPU has not mailed any cards regarding net metering and is not working with third-party callers to contact customers in this manner.
What Customers Should Know
- BPU will never call customers unexpectedly to solicit participation in net metering or energy programs.
- BPU will never ask for personal or financial information over the phone.
- BPU does not partner with unsolicited third-party vendors to contact customers about net metering.
Customers who receive a suspicious call should hang up immediately and not provide any personal information.
What Customers Should Do
- Report the call to BPU Customer Care at (913) 573-9190
- If financial information was shared, contact your bank immediately
- Consider reporting the incident to local law enforcement or the Kansas Attorney General’s Office
BPU is actively monitoring reports and will continue to notify customers as needed.
For media inquiries, please contact Amber Oetting, director of communications and marketing, at aoetting@bpu.com or (913) 573-9049.
